The Same Cortisol Claim, 21 Years Later
The FTC sued a supplement company in June over claims its products treat depression, anxiety and ADHD in children. But four of the seven charged claims are not about curing anything: they are about raising serotonin, dopamine and GABA, and lowering cortisol. The mechanism sentence is charged as a deceptive claim on its own, and the man who formulated the products has been under a federal order about cortisol claims since 2005.

A team in Seoul added machine learning to a blood test for a rare adrenal tumor across 20,516 patients, and performance went from good to excellent. Then, while building the app, they found the model had learned which follow-up tests the clinician ordered, which is a record of what the clinician already suspected. They disclosed it themselves, unprompted.

It was the second most media-covered climate paper of its year, central banks cited it, and its own authors withdrew it in December 2025. The central estimate barely moved; the confidence around it moved a great deal. Underneath sits an error with a name, one that biology students are taught and almost nobody checks for: twenty regions of one country are not twenty independent facts about the world.

One sentence states the priority: passive air defense measures are the first line of defense against UAS. The federal government measured this once, across eight years of survey data, and then stopped publishing it: 20.1 burglaries per 1,000 gated households against 24.9 for everyone else. A doorman did less than a gate. And the households everyone assumes are hunted turn out to be the least burgled group in the country, which says as much about what a national survey can see as it does about risk.

A 2026 Applied Energy study built the cost model instead of assuming it, and the answer inverts the intuition. The chemistry with the cheapest metals, LFP, is the one worth reusing; recyclers have to be paid to take it. The nickel-rich packs are worth shredding. Recycling pays for materials, repurposing pays for durability, and no chemistry is good at both.

A study used 600 mg. The label says Proprietary Blend, 750 mg, with nine names under it and no numbers. The entire permission for that is a seven-word parenthetical Congress wrote into the statute in 1994. But the same rule requires descending order by weight, and that hands you a hard ceiling on every ingredient in the blend, free, in the aisle.

In a study that set temperature to zero, top-p to one, and fixed the seed, one model returned a byte-identical answer on 0.0 percent of questions across ten runs. The largest source of the variation is not in your prompt or your settings: it is how busy the server was.

Similar size, similar speed, similar altitude, similar radar cross section. What separates a quadcopter from a hawk is micro-Doppler, and the discriminating feature sits 20 to 40 dB under the return that got your attention. Detection range and classification range are different numbers.
